Are you aware that we teach yoga in our school?
Hopefully your child will have shared what they are doing in their yoga lessons which are scheduled for an hour each week. Children are taught various poses and relaxation techniques for the whole term. But why do we think it is important to teach this life-skill?
Children today can be under a lot of stress what with homework, pressure to compete with other children, endless after-school activities, over-scheduling -- it all adds up. Teaching Yoga to children helps them develop better body awareness, self-control, flexibility, coordination and concentration. These skills can be carried beyond class and into their daily life. For example, children can practise their breathing to stay centred and calm in difficult situations throughout the day.
Yoga has also been shown to help the hyperactive and attention-deficit child. These children crave movement and sensory/motor stimulus. Yoga helps channel these impulses in a positive way. The poses that we teach can help instil calm, confidence and balance.
So please ask your child what poses they have been learning in their yoga sessions and how it makes them feel.
